Meeting for Applications of Physics in Medical Sciences

Under the patronage of the Presidency of Al-Nasser University, and in the presence of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Ahmed Seif Muharram, the College of Medical Sciences held, on Thursday morning, December 28, 2017, the closing ceremony of the

"Student Research Forum for the Applications of Physics in Medical Sciences"

which was held from 10 to 21 December 2017 for first-level students in the departments of pharmacy and laboratories under the supervision of Dr. Hasan Maridi.

The workshop aimed to enhance the students’ experience in the field of scientific research, in terms of familiarizing themselves with the foundations and mechanism of conducting scientific research, and the conditions for scientific publication; as well as providing students with skills of presentation and good presentation of projects, information and scientific discussion.

Fourteen research topics, representing major topics in the field of physics and its applications in medical sciences, was included as:

1. X-ray tomography

2. Nanotechnology in Medical Sciences

3. Magnetic Resonance Imaging

4. Radiation therapy

5. Ultrasound and its Applications

6. Positron emission tomography

7. Nuclear medicine

8. Blood pressure and its Measurement

9. Radioactivity in Medicine

10. Light in Medicine

11. Electrocardiography (ECG and its medical uses)

12. Lasers in Surgery and Medicine

13. Electromyography (EMG)

14. Thermography

Research Supervisor Dr. Hasan Maridi - Assistant Professor of Nuclear Theoretical Physics pointed out that modern teaching methods are based on three main axes: research, communication and participation, whereby the student becomes a participant in the course-making; This research forum was held as a practical answer for students to their question about the importance of studying physics for medical specialties, especially since many medical applications have a physical basis. Muridi thanked the presidency of Al-Nasser University for its continuous cooperation and support during the period in which preparations were made for the establishment of the research forum.

For his part, Head of the Pharmacy Department, Dr. Yasser Al-Madhaji, praised the efforts made by the supervisor and students to prepare the forum, stressing that Al-Nasser University, represented by the university presidency, supports such activities that develop students’ love of scientific research, knowledge, and clarification, explaining that scientific research is not a luxury but an essential thing for the progress of any society.

About 150 students were divided into twenty-eight research groups, and the research was presented in the form of scientific posters. This presentation simulates the ways researchers present their research in international scientific conferences; each group reviewed its research while the doctors passed by to review and discuss research topics with the students.

The forum, which was held at the headquarters of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Al-Nasser University, was attended also by the head of the quality unit, Dr. Anwar Masoud, the head of the pharmacy department, Dr. Yasser Al-Mathhaji, the head of the Nursing and Community Health Department, Dr. Abdul Raqeeb Al-Hanani, the head of the laboratories department, Dr. Mukhtar Al-Zumar, and a number of faculty and administrative staff members. A large number of students from all departments of the college.
